The Wellspring choir's rendition of the hymn "Abide with me" composed by Henry Francis Lyte and sung to English composer William Henry Monk’s tune Eventide. ______________________ Why is this song special in the context of India's 'Republic Day' celebrations? The Beating retreat in India conducted on the evening of 29 January, officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military - a centuries old military tradition dating from the days when troops disengaged from battle at sunset. Every year since 1950 till 2021 the song Abide With Me, would form the sombre highpoint of the conclusion of the celebrations. It was always the last piece to be played by the brass bands before the troops receded up Raisina Hill to the tune of poet Allama Iqbal’s Saare jahan se achha. Played at dusk, this was also the last piece before the retreat buglers brought down the Indian flag against the backdrop of the setting sun and a simultaneous lighting up of the Rashtrapati Bhawan, South Block, North Block and Parliament House.
